What is PSV License?
-
-
A PSV License (Public Service Vehicle) is a type of vocational driving licence that allows drivers to legally operate vehicles used to transport paying passengers, including taxis, e-hailing (such as Grab), and other public transport services.
As per the latest update from the Ministry of Transport Malaysia, the traditional written examinations for PSV (Taxi, Kereta Sewa, E-Hailing & GDL) have been abolished. New applicants are now only required to attend a 6-hour PSV course, which covers essential topics such as road safety, passenger handling, and regulatory compliance.
Upon completion of the course, applicants will receive their PSV certification and approval, subject to fulfilling other requirements such as medical check-up and document verification.
This streamlined process makes it faster and more accessible for new drivers to obtain their PSV License and start driving legally for e-hailing platforms.
-
- Is PSV License compulsory for all E-Hailing drivers?
- Yes. A PSV License is mandatory for all e-hailing, public, and commercial vehicle drivers under regulations set by the Ministry of Transport Malaysia, regardless of whether you drive part-time or full-time. All e-hailing drivers must obtain and pass their PSV License before proceeding with the EVP (E-Hailing Vehicle Permit) application.
- How many types of PSV are there?
There are three (3) types of PSV License categories:
- Teksi / Teksi Mewah / Kereta Sewa / E-Hailing
- Bas Mini / Van
- Bas
- Which PSV category is used by Grab Drivers
-
Only the PSV License under the Taxi / Teksi Mewah / Kereta Sewa / E-Hailing category is accepted for Grab driver registration.
-
- How much does PSV License for Grab Drivers?
-
The cost of obtaining a PSV License may vary depending on the driving institute. On average, the PSV course fee ranges from RM70 to RM200, with the maximum price capped at RM200 by the Ministry of Transport Malaysia. Grab provides a reimbursement of up to RM100 after your account is successfully activated.
In addition to the course fee, all new applicants are required to complete a mandatory JPJL8A medical examination, which typically costs RM50 and can be done at any registered private clinic. There is also a PSV card processing fee of RM20 payable at the Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Malaysia (JPJ).
For applicants in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, Ipoh, Melaka and Johor Bahru, Grab offers a special PSV program at RM50 (inclusive of light refreshments), exclusively at selected Grab Driver Centres (GDC). Upon activation, Grab will reimburse RM50, effectively making the PSV course free when completed through Grab.
In summary, the total cost to obtain a PSV License consists of:
- PSV course fee
- JPJL8A medical examination
- PSV card processing fee
With available reimbursements, your overall cost can be significantly reduced—or even fully covered when applying through Grab.
