Grab Puspakom: Inspection for E-Hailing

A PUSPAKOM inspection is required for certain vehicles before they can be used for GrabCar or other e-hailing services in Malaysia.

The inspection ensures that the vehicle is safe, complies with the required specifications and is suitable for carrying passengers.

If your car is less than three years old, a PUSPAKOM inspection is generally NOT REQUIRED during the initial registration. Cars that have reached three years of age or older must undergo a PUSPAKOM inspection to complete the e-hailing registration process.

After the vehicle has been registered for e-hailing use, periodic inspections must be completed according to the applicable requirements.

Who Needs a PUSPAKOM Inspection?

A PUSPAKOM inspection may be required if:

The car has reached three years of age or older.
The vehicle is being registered for e-hailing use.
The vehicle’s periodic inspection is about to expire.
The driver needs to renew an e-hailing permit or related document.
A reinspection is required after the vehicle failed its previous inspection.

The vehicle’s age is generally determined using its registration date or the vehicle information recorded by the relevant authority.

Do Cars Below Three Years Old Need PUSPAKOM Inspection?

Cars below three years old generally do not need a PUSPAKOM inspection for their initial e-hailing registration.

However, the vehicle must still satisfy the GrabCar eligibility requirements and have the necessary documents, including:

  1. Vehicle Ownership Certificate or VOC.
  2. Valid motor insurance.
  3. E-hailing insurance coverage.
  4. Valid road tax.
  5. Owner’s supporting documents if the car does not belong to the driver.

Once the car reaches three years of age, it must undergo a PUSPAKOM inspection according to the current requirements.

During the inspection, PUSPAKOM will examine several safety-related parts and aspects of the vehicle, including:

  1. Identification card of the vehicle owner or representative.
  2. Vehicle Ownership Certificate or VOC.
    PUSPAKOM appointment confirmation.
  3. Authorisation letter if the vehicle is brought by a representative.
  4. Additional documents requested for the e-hailing application.
  5. Driving licence or other identification documents, if required.

How to Book a PUSPAKOM Inspection

An inspection appointment can be made through PUSPAKOM’s official booking platform.

Step 1: Register or Log In

Open the official PUSPAKOM booking platform and log in to your account.

Step 2: Enter the Vehicle Details

Make sure the vehicle registration number, chassis number and owner’s information are entered correctly.

Step 3: Select the E-Hailing Inspection

Choose the inspection category related to the registration or renewal of an e-hailing vehicle.

Step 4: Choose a Branch and Date

Select your preferred PUSPAKOM inspection centre, date and available time slot.

Step 5: Make Payment

Complete the payment based on the amount displayed by the booking system.

Step 6: Attend the Inspection

Arrive early and bring all the required documents. Make sure the vehicle is in good condition before entering the inspection lane.

How Much Does a Grab PUSPAKOM Inspection Cost?

The cost depends on the inspection category and PUSPAKOM’s current charges. The total amount may include an inspection fee, booking fee or other applicable processing charges.

How to Prepare Your Car for Inspection

Before attending the PUSPAKOM inspection, check the following:

  1. All vehicle lights are working.
  2. Brake lights and signal lights are functioning properly.
  3. Tyres have sufficient tread depth.
  4. Tyre and wheel sizes comply with the permitted specifications.
  5. The windscreen is not cracked.
  6. Window tint complies with the permitted transparency level.
  7. The handbrake is working properly.
  8. There are no significant oil leaks.
  9. Windscreen wipers and washers are functioning.
  10. The horn is working.
  11. Registration plates are clear and comply with the required specifications.
  12. The chassis number is visible and unobstructed.
  13. The vehicle is not excessively lowered or improperly modified.

If your vehicle has dark window tint, non-standard lights, decorative registration plates, excessively lowered suspension or a modified exhaust, correct these issues before attending the inspection.

Common Reasons Vehicles Fail PUSPAKOM Inspection

Vehicles may fail an inspection because of:

  1. Window tint that is too dark.
  2. Faulty brake lights or signal lights.
  3. Worn or damaged tyres.
  4. Unbalanced brakes.
  5. An unclear chassis number.
  6. Non-compliant registration plates.
  7. A cracked windscreen.
  8. Improper suspension modifications.
  9. Excessive vehicle emissions.
  10. Leaks or damage underneath the vehicle.

If the vehicle fails, the inspection report will identify the areas that need to be corrected. Complete the repairs and arrange a reinspection within the period given.

How Long Is a PUSPAKOM Inspection Report Valid?

The validity period depends on the inspection category and the purpose for which the report was issued.

For e-hailing vehicles that have reached the applicable inspection age, periodic inspections are generally required every 12 months. Drivers should renew their inspections early instead of waiting until the expiry date.

Failure to renew the inspection may prevent the renewal of e-hailing documents or affect the driver’s account.

What Should You Do After Passing the Inspection?

After your vehicle passes the PUSPAKOM inspection:

  1. Keep the original inspection report.
  2. Take a clear photograph or scan of the report.
  3. Continue with the e-hailing insurance and E-Hailing Vehicle Permit application.
  4. Complete any remaining registration documents.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do all Grab cars need a PUSPAKOM inspection?

Not necessarily during the initial registration. An inspection is generally required once the car reaches three years of age. Periodic inspections will also be required after the vehicle reaches the applicable inspection age.

Can I register for Grab before completing the inspection?

You may begin the registration process and submit your documents first. However, if your vehicle requires a PUSPAKOM inspection, the registration process cannot be completed until a passing inspection report is received.

Important: Do not arrange a PUSPAKOM inspection before your GrabCar account has been activated. For drivers activated under JustGrab, you must also complete the minimum requirement of 30 trips before proceeding with the inspection.

Can I complete the inspection if the car is not registered under my name?

Yes, subject to the required documents from the vehicle owner and an authorisation letter. Inform the registration team that you will be using a third-party vehicle.

How long does the inspection take?

The actual waiting and inspection time depends on the selected branch, the number of vehicles and the inspection category. Arrive earlier than your scheduled appointment.

Will I need to pay again if the vehicle fails?

A reinspection fee may apply. The amount and reinspection period are subject to PUSPAKOM’s current policy.

Is a passing PUSPAKOM report enough to start driving?

No. The driver must also complete the other requirements, including the PSV licence, e-hailing insurance, E-Hailing Vehicle Permit and driver account activation.

Can the PUSPAKOM inspection cost be claimed?

Inspection assistance or reimbursement may be available to eligible new driver-partners. Keep the receipt and check your eligibility before submitting a claim.
